NHS Highland has revealed that work to boost parking capacity at Raigmore Hospital will be available by the weekend.

The news was confirmed by chief executive Iain Stewart at Tuesday’s NHS board meeting.

At least one of the new overspill car parks will be open while barriers are also set to be operational as part of the £620,000 project.

The barriers are a particularly welcome development for campaigners who have been fighting to stop drivers using the facility as a free park-and-ride.

Mr Stewart said: “The work has been on for a couple of months at Raigmore car park. We were very fortunate to receive money from our endowment fund to create, I believe, an extra 200-plus spaces.

“And also there will be a new barrier system coming in which means people will not be able to abuse the car parking at the hospital.”
