The team behind Kingussie's New Year celebrations has announced that the 2020 parade and fireworks display will not be going ahead.

It was not entirely a surprise this afternoon when Lydie Bocquillon, of the town's business forum confirmed: "We have all decided that it's only in the town's best interests that we call off this year's event in the light of the coronavirus pandemic."

The forum, along with Kingussie Shinty Club and the town's community council, were planning a show to emulate last year's spectacular restoration of the Hogmanay festivities, but with no guarantee of any let-up in the fight against Covid-19 it was impossible to gauge what the situation would be in three months' time.

Only this week the Government brought in a maximum of six people for social groups, with many public events banned altogether, as the number of positive cases grew once more across the country.

"But we are sure that next year's event will only be bigger and better," said Lydie. "That's what we are planning for now.

"We would have loved to continue with last year's success but felt that it was wise in the circumstances to cancel the 2020 event.

"We're sorry but it's for the best."
