Kingussie High School has said good progress is being made with plans for re-opening in mid-August and the safety of staff and pupils remains at the heart of its decision-making.

The school has been working up proposals for 'blended learning', social distancing measures in classrooms and tacking the problem of school transport.

Ian Adamson told pupils and parents in his latest update it has been a huge task starting to plan the re-opening of the school.

He said: "I am confident that we are moving towards an effective plan that adheres to the government social distancing measures but also allows us to scale up the number of pupils if and when the measures are relaxed.

"Our school is unique in terms of the amount of pupils who use school transport to and from school and this has been a big part of our planning.

"The current plan has been shared with teachers for comments this week and I hope to be able to inform pupils, parents and carers of it next week.

"We are planning for a blended model of learning for our return in August - this means our pupils will have some time in school as well as home learning."

Mr Adamson continued: "The health, safety and well-being of pupils and staff is at the heart of the decision-making; this includes the incorporation of measures to support social distancing in the school and ways to mitigate the risk of infection and transmission."

This will include the provision of hand sanitisers, cleaning products and signage to reinforce social distancing and hygiene requirements.

The school said it has now completed the SQA process for 2019/20.

Mr Adamson said: "Staff have put in huge effort to ensure well considered estimates were submitted to the SQA who will now review these and make decisions about grades to be awarded across the country."

SQA results will be released on August 4. There were no examinations this year because of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Mr Adamson also revealed that the school's PE department is working on a digital Sports Day to round off the academic year.

He commented: "We hope this will be a break from working on a Chromebook and include a variety of fun activities that can be done with all the family."

Grantown Grammar School is expected to announce its progress report on preparations for a return to the classrooms early next week and details will appear in the Strathy.
