Kingussie butcher Donald Gilmour’s pies rise to the occasion
A Kingussie butcher has proved he is a cut above the competition with two gold awards at an nationwide industry contest.
Donald Gilmour, who runs his butcher’s on the town’s King Street, has bagged two awards in the 2025 Scottish Craft Butchers Steak Pie & Speciality Meat Pie Evaluation.
D. Gilmour Butchers struck gold with their oxtail with redcurrant pie and their traditional steak pie.
Mr Gilmour told the Strathy: “We are delighted to receive two gold awards as this reflects the locally sourced quality beef we use in our pies.
“This is a reward for the hard work and consistency that goes into our products for the shop.”
The heats were held recently at Forth Valley College with more than 140 pies from throughout the country tested for appearance, flavour, texture and appeal.
The panel of judges included industry experts, food writers and interested consumers who were ‘blown away by the quality, innovation and craft in each pie.
The event is organised by Scottish Craft Butchers in conjunction with William Sword and Dalziel Retail Butchery.
Nikki McDowell of William Sword Ltd, said: “We are proud to continue supporting the rich traditions of Scottish food culture, and there’s nothing more iconic than the steak pie.
“Sponsoring the Traditional Steak Pie Awards allows us to celebrate the skill, quality, and passion of butchers and bakers across the country who keep this timeless favourite at the heart of family tables.
“It’s an honour to recognise the craftsmanship that goes into every pie."
