GRANTOWN'S SHOWPIECE: The Square is firmly in the middle of a current fight.

The fight is on to save Grantown’s showpiece Square from Highland Council designs on charging for its public use - but who will fund the battle?

In an update today on the legal battle over the Strathspey capital’s Common Good land the Grantown Grapevine has posted: “Members of the community council continue to work with a local solicitor and an advocate, representing the community council on behalf of the residents and businesses of Grantown, against the current writ lodged by the Highland Council.

“This is to appropriate and introduce charges for public events on the Common Good Land in the Square.

“This has obviously incurred expensive legal fees which will be ongoing with further Inverness Sheriff Court presentations on April 2 and May 23.

“Grantown hosting the following popular events will be under threat, if the Highland Council are successful introducing charges

“Cairngorms Farmers Market, Thunder in the Glens, Greentown, Grantown Does Christmas, Christmas Torchlight procession, Hogmanay in the Square.”

The town’s local government watchdog is now exploring the feasibility of crowd funding the ongoing expenses and is aiming to gauge the support from within Grantown.
