The Public Audit and Post-legislative Scrutiny Committee is expected to look into the matter some time after this mid-August when the Scottish Parliament returns after the recess.

The committee will take evidence from the Auditor General for Scotland (AGS) follow Audit Scotland's recent report on the situation at the resort.

Highlands MSP Edward Mountain (Scottish Conservatives) has been pushing for a further probe following the watchdog's findings.

He said he will be attending the session in order to ask questions to the Auditor General of Scotland concerning her report.

Mr Mountain said: "There is a lot of unhappiness locally in the inability of HIE to understand the lease which they drew up and which has left a massive cost to the taxpayer."

Following the evidence session, the committee will decide on its next steps and what further scrutiny of the report – if any – it wishes to undertake.

Committee convener Anas Sarwar MSP confirmed an evidence session with the AGS on the recent report on the management of the Cairngorm funicular and railway "will be scheduled for post-recess".

AN HIE spokesperson said: “We welcome the Auditor General’s report and any further investigations into our role in relation to the Cairngorm Estate.”

HIE acted appropriately in appointing Cairngorm Mountain private operator which later went bust
