NHS Highland is searching to make savings of £700,000 while dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

The health authority is to receive a bailout of £11.4 million from the Scottish Government, but that falls short of its forecast £12.1 million deficit.

The board had an original target of £28 million of cuts to balance the books in the current financial year.

But, like in previous years, it appears that failing to fill vacant posts has cost it dearly as locums have stepped in at a cost of £16.4 million so far.

In December, a plan to reduce cost pressures was implemented, targeting £6.8 million with £5.5 million saved so far.

The overall financial position shows some improvement when compared to the same period over the last two years when the board’s overspend ranged from £14 million to £16 million.
