The Cairngorm funicular is now due to return to service in time for winter 2022/23 but no official date has been given.

A Badenoch and Strathspey Highland councillor is pressing the authority's leaders for information on the completion date for the repair of the Cairngorm funicular.

John Bruce (Scottish Conservative) has lodged a motion at tomorrow's full meeting of the council in Inverness wanting a timescale for the re-opening of the mountain railway.

It has been out of operation on health and safety grounds since September 2018 because of concerns over the integrity of the two kilometre long concrete viaduct carrying the track.

Councillor Bruce is asking the chair of the council's economy and infrastructure committee: "Is the council in full communication with Highlands and Islands Enterprise on the progress of repairing the Cairngorm funicular and able to provide a date for a fully functioning system?"

In a holding response, the council's administration has stated: "HIE is responsible for the Cairngorm funicular and the council is being kept up to date with progress on repairs through the regular strategic meeting between the leader and the chairman of HIE.

"The latest position is that the period for repairs is being extended to Autumn 2022."
