Greggs coming to Inverness city centre, new plans lodged with Highland Council have revealed
Famous bakery giant Greggs plans to open a new store in a prime Inverness city centre location.
Planning applications have been lodged by Greggs in relation to a long-vacant former shoe shop on Inverness High Street.
If approved, the food giant looks set to move into the former Shoe Zone store, next to Specsavers, at 46 High Street.
The move follows the opening of the bakery and fast food giant's first Highland outlet at the Esso station on Longman Road back in early 2022.
Ever since, fans of the bakery chain and its famous steak bakes have speculated as to whether further outlets might follow elsewhere in the city.
And the new planning applications appear to confirm that.
As well as an application for new shopfront signs bearing the Greggs name and branding, a separate application has also been lodged for the installation of new air conditioning units on the rear of the building, and a building warrant has also been submitted for a range of interior modifications.
These modifications are expected to cost £40,000 and would include the removal of the shop's ‘existing fit-out elements’ and the erection of new partitions to suit the planned new layout.
New electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems are also planned.
It is not known when Greggs hopes to open the new store or how many jobs might be created.
Greggs said it was unable to comment on live planning applications, but did not deny the plans for a new High Street site when asked about them.
Listings for the site by estate agency Beacon Brooke show that the property has just over 2000 square feet of space on the ground floor and an additional 1450 square feet on the first floor, and had a rateable value of £54,000 per year.
