A struggling Strathspey bowling club will survive for at least one more season following an emergency meeting to discuss its future.

A total of 15 members attended an extraordinary general meeting of Grantown Bowling Club last night (Wednesday), where it was agreed the club would continue.

The emergency meeting was prompted by concerns over the future of the club following a drop in membership, a drop in funds and repairs needed to the greens.

A requirement to fill key roles at the club had also presented problems.

At the emergency meeting, members concluded that with the relaxation of the restrictions arising from the pandemic, there would now be an opportunity to attract new members.

They will also aim to restart some badly needed fundraising activities in a bid to increase club funds.

Club members felt that the club was still a valuable asset that benefited the whole community – and one which helped to attract visitors to the town.

Duncan Cain, secretary of Grantown Bowling Club, said: "The current vice president has indicated his willingness to step up to president. The other vacancies will be determined at the forthcoming AGM."

Help has also been offered to improve and maintain the club green.

The secretary continued: "One of the current members who has experience in green work has volunteered to bring the green back up to an acceptable standard before the start of the new season.

"This is a big commitment and he has been promised support from other members.

"However, a specialist contractor will need to be employed later in the year to complete other essential work. Hopefully, by that time we will have raised the finance needed to pay for this."

This year's annual general meeting has now been arranged for next Wednesday, March 23 at 7.30pm in the clubhouse.

Mr Cain added: "Once again, we would ask anyone who is interested in playing outdoor bowls to get in touch by email at grantownbowls@gmail.com.

"No experience is needed and whether you’re looking for a sociable place to make new friends, find a new sport to get into, or you’re on the hunt for a fun activity for the whole family, then bowls could be the answer."
