A FURTHER 1905 Covid-19 cases have been detected across the whole of Scotland in the past 24 hours.

The fresh positive tests were down on the 2464 recorded the day before.

But the percentage of tests which returned positive results (15.0 per cent) was nearly identical to the 15.2 per cent recorded yesterday - and the drop in cases was the result of fewer tests being reported on Sunday into Monday.

There have been no localised breakdowns of coronavirus figures over the New Year weekend, and the next set of figures for NHS Highland will not be released until Tuesday – when the case load from January 1 to January 4 will finally be known.

Today’s daily update came as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the whole of mainland Scotland will be going into full lockdown from midnight tonight - a move prompted by a “steeply rising” number of infections in the wake of the emergence of a much more contagious strain of the virus.

The new measures will be in place until at least the end of January.
