FOUR further cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the NHS Highland health board area.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic increased from 4936 to 4940 when the latest daily figures were released on Wednesday.

The number of people being treated for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals fell by two, to nine, last night – the lowest total since January 6.

There were 692 fresh positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland in the past 24 hours. This was the equivalent of 3.1 per cent of all tests conducted during that period.

Some 321 people were receiving treatment for the virus in Scotland’s hospitals last night – a fall of 23 from Tuesday’s update.

There were 31 people in intensive care, which was up three.

And sadly there have been three further deaths among people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, no new positive tests were recorded in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar over the past day.

Fifty-four fresh cases were detected in NHS Grampian, which now has a running total of 14,125.

And NHS Tayside’s overall tally rose to 13,980, following 49 new positive tests.

Some 215,075 confirmed cases of the coronavirus have been detected in Scotland since the pandemic began last year.

Another 34,940 people had their first vaccination jag in the 24 hours up to 8.30am this morning – taking the running total to almost 2.25 million.

The number of Scottish adults who have received their second dose is almost at 250,000 after an additional 13,581 people had their second injection.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon believes that half of Scotland’s adult population will have received their first dose before the end of Wednesday.
