FORTY-four new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus were detected across the NHS Highland health board area in the past 24 hours.

The region’s cumulative number of cases increased from 5667 to 5711 when Public Health Scotland released its latest daily update on Tuesday.

Scottish hospitals were treating 171 people for the virus last night, with 18 of those in intensive care.

Sadly, four further deaths have been registered among people who tested positive in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases overnight in NHS Eileanan Siar, but NHS Shetland and NHS Orkney each registered one fresh positive test – for cumulative totals of 253 and 81 respectively.

There were 122 newly-confirmed cases across NHS Grampian, for a running total of 16,478.

And NHS Tayside’s total jumped by 251 – to 17,745.

Scotland has now registered 257,742 known infections since the pandemic first began.

More than 3.66 million people have now received their first vaccination jag across Scotland, while more than 2.6 million have had their second.
