A new £810,000 project for the construction of a new waste transfer station building on the strath's only landfill site is going ahead.

Highland Council has awarded the contract to John Gunn and Sons Ltd to carry out construction works at the Granish facility north of Aviemore.

The waste transfer station forms part of the council’s long-term strategy for waste management and its construction will enable the closure of the landfill at Granish by Spring 2023.

Construction is due to start on April 12 and is expected to be completed in August.

A council spokesperson said: "The works will take place within the boundary of the existing household waste recycling centre (HWRC) at Granish.

"The current HWRC will close for the duration of the works, and an alternative, temporary facilities will be created on the site of the former concrete batching plant at Granish, approximately 100m from the current site.

"Signage will be erected at the current site entrance directing site users to the new facility."

"The council apologises for the temporary inconvenience caused by the construction works."

The existing HWRC will close at 4pm on April 9, and the new household waste site will open at 9am on April 12.

There will be no public access to either HWRC at Granish on April 10.
