Emily (9) makes the most of the monsoon rain in Aviemore

The heavens opened in Aviemore early evening yesterday giving one intrepid youngster the chance to go for a paddle down her back street.

Nine-year-old Emily Jarvis enjoyed an impromptu canoe expedition in Grampian View after the monsoon-like rain subsided.

The heavy rains poured in just after 6pm and seemed to be localised with other parts of the strath remaining dry.

Grampian View resident Dougie Somerville told the Strathy: “We noticed the rain was a lot heavier than usual. I went to the front door and it looked more like a small river heading down the cul-de-sac.

“Looking down, the pavement edges started to be covered by the water. The rain was so heavy that water was bubbling out the drains and the telecom man holes

“Next thing the kids from down the bottom house have their canoe out and were having great fun. On a more serious point from the water draining away as normal, the street flooded very quickly.

“If it had continued for 10 more minutes the lowest houses might have been at risk of flooding - certainly under the properties.”

Mr Somerville said there have been some blocked drains in the vicinity which did not help matters.

He added: “I believe this was due to improper materials being flushed away. To be fair once the heavy rain stopped the drains did a good job.”
