A climb of eight has been recorded in the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the NHS Highland area.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic rose from 5449 to 5457 when Public Health Scotland released its latest daily update today.

There were 974 new positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland since the last update – representing five per cent of those tests conducted during the past 24 hours.

Some 137 people were receiving treatment for the virus in Scotland’s hospitals last night.

And there were 17 people in intensive care.

Sadly two more deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were again no newly-confirmed cases in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

NHS Grampian’s tally climbed by 43, to 15,914.

And, in NHS Tayside, there were another 118 positive tests – for a running total of 16,819.

There have now been 248,515 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Scotland since the global pandemic started last year.

A total of 3,531,461 Scots have now had their first vaccination injection, while nearly 2,470,181 have received their second jag.
