Crowd to gather in Boat of Garten to cheer on Sterritt and Peters
The roar in Boat of Garten will be loud enough to be heard in Fynn Sterritt’s home town of Kingussie if he and teammate James Peters cross the line to win an Olympic medal later today.
The medal race for the 49er class is scheduled for this afternoon at 1.43pm and watching on at Boat’s community hall will be a good crowd of well-wishers.
Loch Morlich Sailing Club has organised a watch party to cheer on one of their own.
Sterritt and GB teammate James Peters retain medal hopes although the gold looks a very long shot after one poor result yesterday.
The former Kingussie High School pupil is delighted that a watch party had been organised locally and has even sent his own message to be broadcast ahead of the medal race.
Dr Kim Guthrie, who used to be in the Scottish and British sailing squads with Sterritt at junior level, and Jon Bailey have been busy organising the watch party being held from 1pm until 4pm.
There will be refreshments and a welcome talk from Loch Morlich Sailing Club as its committee makes the most of sailing’s time in the spotlight.
Dr Guthrie, from Kingussie, said: “Fynn has recorded a video for us to show and there will be a raffle and we have merchandise from RYA Scotland and a British flag signed by all the British Olympic sailors as we as signed photos from Fynn.
“We are all hoping that Fynn and James get a medal.”
She said it was great to see the sport and club in the spotlight: “The sailing club at Loch Morlich is so basic - there is no running water or electricity.
“It is brilliant that Fynn is there when we are competing with clubs with high profile clubhouses.”
Everyone is welcome along to watch the livestream on a big screen to cheer on Sterritt and Peters.
