NHS Highland has posted its biggest single day increase in Covid cases since New Year’s Day.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic rose by 124, to 6290, in the 24 hours up to 2pm on Monday.

That total is up by more than 300 from the 5979 known cumulative infections reported on Friday – when the last daily regional breakdowns by health board were released.

Monday’s update, which included the daily health board figures for the weekend, revealed that cases rose by 107 in the 24 hours leading up to 2pm on Saturday, and by another 80 by 2pm on Sunday, before the latest jump of 124 going into Monday.

There were 3285 new positive tests across Scotland in the past 24 hours – or 12.6 per cent of all those people tested during that period.

However, Public Health Scotland (PHS) warned of an “ongoing delay” in a testing laboratory, which means that the number of positive tests could be higher.

Some 202 people were receiving treatment for the virus in Scotland’s hospitals last night, 20 of whom were in intensive care.

No new deaths were registered among people who tested positive in the previous 28 days, although PHS cautions that registry offices are generally closed at weekends.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no newly-confirmed cases of the virus in either NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar – but NHS Shetland’s cumulative total rose by three, to 263.

NHS Grampian’s running tally rose by 252, to 17,575.

And NHS Tayside’s total stood at 19,503, after a further 335 positive tests overnight.

There have now been 274,217 confirmed cases in Scotland since the pandemic began last year.

Almost 3.77 million people have now had their first vaccination jag in Scotland, while more than 2.69 million have received their second.
