Chance for locals to stand for community councils in Aviemore and Boat of Garten

Applications are being sought for two community councils in Badenoch and Strathspey which have fallen below required strength.

Nominations are being invited from people seeking election to 15 watchdogs across the region also covering Sutherland, Easter Ross, Wester Ross, Isle of Raasay, the Black Isle, Inverness, Nairnshire and Lochaber.

They are six places available on Aviemore Community Council and four for the watchdog for Boat of Garten.

Community councils are voluntary organisations that express the views and concerns of local people within their area across a wide range of issues from new buildings and roads to local services and facilities.

The scheme for the establishment of community councils can be downloaded from www.highland.gov.uk/elections .

A Highland Council spokesperson said: "The community councils welcome local residents to get involved and are looking for people to put themselves forward.

"They need to hold interim elections has come about due to the resignation of some members which have brought the 15 community councils down to below half of their memberships."

Elections are to be held as follows with the number of vacancies to be filled in brackets: Acharacle (6), Aviemore & Vicinity (6), Boat of Garten (4), Conon Bridge (6), Culloden (5), Duror & Kentallen (5), East Nairnshire (8), Glengarry (5), Kinlochbervie (6), Kinlochleven (5), Morvern (5), Raasay (5), Resolis (3), Shieldaig (8) and Wick (7).

To qualify candidates must be 16 years of age or over (by the date of the close of nominations), be registered as an elector on the local government electoral register and resident of the community council area.

A nomination form can be obtained via:

• download from Highland Council's website www.highland.gov.uk/elections;

• request by email to: election@highland.gov.uk;

• contact the ward manager Liz Cowie responsible for the area. Details available published online.

Completed nomination forms must be submitted to the appropriate ward manager and must be received not later than noon on Tuesday 30 August.

Copies of the form may also be received electronically as long as they have been completed correctly and contains both the signature of the candidate and witness.

If any of the community councils receive valid nominations by the deadline that exceeds its membership number, an election will take place on Thursday 29 September via postal ballot.
