The Cairngorms National Park Authority has hit its latest target for woodlands creation ahead of schedule.

Park bosses have said that nearly 5,000 hectares woodlands had been planted with a year left of the 2017-2022 reporting period.

It has also been suggested that the CNPA should operate its own carbon off-set scheme for people travelling to the national park.

Board member Willie Munro suggested at the latest board meeting: "I noticed that Mountaineering Scotland has just launched a scheme in partnership with Trees for Life to encourage people who travel all over the country to climb hills to offset their carbon.

"I was thinking it would be good to have a site as part of that in the national park as part of the carbon reduction programme."

CNPA chief executive Grant Moir said that he was happy to look into this with park authority officials.

In an update as part of his regular chief executive report, Mr Moir said: "We are aware of quite a few woodland creation schemes currently shaping up, and have fed significantly into early discussions of several of these so far.

"At least seven estates are proposing large, predominantly native woodland schemes of 500 hectares or more.

"Furthermore, over the course of the 2020/21 year the Cairngorms National Park Woodland Challenge Fund has so far assisted six native woodland creation projects amounting to well over 200 hectares across seven properties with grants totalling £13,038."
