Cairngorm Mountain is to partially reopen when Covid rules allow later this month but there will be no snowsports.

Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd chief executive Susan Smith said: "We are partially reopening on April 26 where our pop-up catering facility will provide food and beverage facilities to customers; our retail shop will reopen along with the toilets in the Base Station.

"Unfortunately, whilst we have seen some unusual spring weather these past few weeks, there remains insufficient snow cover on the lower mountain to permit access for general snowsports.

"The mountain garden will be open and we hope that this will prove popular with families.

"Over the weekends we will provide tubing for the many local customers who have come to enjoy this product.

"This has been an incredibly challenging winter for all, and we are thankful to everyone who has supported us during this time."

Cairngorm Mountain closed on Christmas Eve because of the Covid lockdown which came into force on Boxing Day.

There was only one weekend of snowsports – December 19 and 20 – but the lack of snow meant that there was only very limited skiing and snowboarding on offer.

The SnowFactory was used to create a short run on the lower slopes by the Day Lodge.

Ironically, winter 2020/21 has seen some of the heaviest snow and best cover for a decade.

Contractors Balfour Beatty have remobilised on site to recommence work on the repair of the funicular viaduct.

A CMSL spokesperson said: "During the course of these works there will be heavy machinery operating in the resort, so we kindly ask that all visitors accessing the mountain follow signed diversion routes and observe all warning signs and barriers.

"Information regarding these can be found outside the Base Station and at the bottom of the lower Coire Cas trail."
