Work has started on Academy Street, with the bollards now removed that were installed during Covid.

Dozens were installed around four years ago during the coronavirus pandemic as part of a Spaces for People initiative to aid social distancing by effectively widening the pavements on either side of the road.

Similar interventions were previously in place around Inverness Castle, Bridge Street and part of the riverside.

Those erected outside the taxi rank will remain in the middle of the road on the approach to the Union Street Junction. These bollards are remaining as permanent traffic management measures to prevent U turn manoeuvres.

The decision for the bollards to go was taken during a September council meeting, when there was a 30-23 vote to ditch the local authority’s controversial plans to revamp Academy Street.

The Highland Council has appointed Marko to carry out road marking works.

The work will take between four and five days to complete, weather dependent.

Drivers using Academy Street are being advised to allow extra time for journeys.
