A 33 year old Aviemore man who grabbed his partner by the neck in a drunken rage has been jailed for nine months.

Marias Luchian appeared by video link earlier today from Inverness Prison before Sheriff Gary Aitken after a background report had been called for.

He had previously admitted assaulting the woman on December 11, last year, in a house in Morlich Place, Aviemore, to her injury.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told Luchian, of Craigellachie Avenue, Aviemore, had not been traced by police until February 4, earlier this year.

Police officers went to his address to arrest him but he ran upstairs, grabbed a pair of trainers and threw one of them, fiscal depute Niall Macdonald said.

"It hit a sergeant on the head but did not cause injury," said Mr Macdonald. "He then violently struggled with officers."

Defence solicitor Ben Thom said: "My client intends to give up alcohol. He can't trust himself to drink as it leads to this type of behaviour."

Luchian also admitted a breach of a community payback order imposed previously for another unspecified offence.

Jailing him but backdating it to February 5 when Luchian was remanded, Sheriff Aitken told him: "You have a poor record for domestic offending and breaching court orders.

"Only a custodial sentence is appropriate."

He also imposed a three year non-harassment order to protect Luchian's former partner
