Motorists using the A86 near Laggan can expect to benefit from an improved road surface with works at three locations set to be carried out next week.

The £285,000 overnight improvements will see over 2km of the A86 resurfaced at sections of the route, creating a safer and smoother journey for road users.

The surfacing project comprises:

• A86 East of Wolftrax – Monday, April 29 to Thursday, May 2 (four nights) – 7pm to 7am

• A86 Strathmashie – Monday 6 to Tuesday 7 (two nights) – 7pm – 7am

• A86 Pattack Falls – Wednesday 8 to Thursday 9 (two nights) – 7pm -7am

A Traffic Scotland spokesperson said that to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, an overnight road closure would be required at each location during the improvements due to the narrow width of the road. To help minimise disruption to motorists, amnesties at 9pm, 11pm, 1am and 4am would be in place each night during the overnight closures.

"Vehicles will be stacked at either end of the closures and escorted through the work site when safe to do so at these times. Due to the proximity of the Strathmasie and Pattack Falls work locations escorted traffic will pass through both sites under one continuous amnesty. Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times."

The alternative route for drivers not wishing to wait for above timed amnesties is travelling via Inverness using the A82 northward and A9 southward and vice versa: "This adds about 60 miles to the journey between Spean Bridge and Kingussie

"At each location, traffic management will be removed outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum, however a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place for safety as traffic will be running on a temporary surface."

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West representative, added: “These essential resurfacing works at these three locations on the A86 will upgrade the existing road surface, greatly improving the quality and safety for road users.

“We have planned the project to take place overnight to help minimise disruption as much as possible. The overnight road closures at each location are essential to ensure the safety of road workers and road users, however our teams will look to do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance and would encourage road users to plan their journeys ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
