FORTY-three new Covid-19 cases were detected across the NHS Highland health board area in the past day.

The cumulative number of infections recorded across the health board since the start of the pandemic increased from 3843 to 3886 when the latest daily figures were released on Friday.

The number of people being treated for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals and their intensive care units remained unchanged, at 43 and six respectively.

There were 1155 new positive tests for the coronavirus across Scotland in the past 24 hours. This represented 5.8 per cent of all tests carried out during that window.

Some 1958 people were being treated in Scotland’s hospitals for Covid-19 last night – down 25 on the previous day.

Of those, 144 were in intensive care, an increase of two from the update on Thursday.

And, sadly a further 70 people have died after testing positive in the previous 28 days. It takes the number of dead under that measure beyond 6000, to 6040.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new confirmed infections in the Northern Isles in the past 24 hours. But NHS Eileanan Siar reported six new cases, to take its cumulative total to 186.

On the mainland there were 64 new positive tests in NHS Grampian, which has now recorded 12,325 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

And there were 70 further cases in NHS Tayside, which has a running tally of 11,896.

There have been 177,688 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have received their first dose of the vaccine increased to 515,855 – up more than 50,000 in the past 48 hours.

The Scottish Government added that 96 per cent of all care home residents have now received their first jag, while 68 per cent of all over 80s living in the wider community have also had their initial injections.
