NINETEEN new cases of Covid-19 have been detected across the NHS Highland health board area in the past day.

The region’s cumulative number of cases since the start of the pandemic increased from 4246 to 4265 when the latest daily figures were released by the Scottish Government on Wednesday afternoon.

Some 33 people were receiving treatment for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals last night, up one from yesterday.

Ten of those were in intensive care – a figure unchanged since Tuesday’s update.

There were 803 new positive tests for the coronavirus across Scotland in the past 24 hours. This represented 4.8 per cent of all the tests carried out during that time period.

Scotland’s hospitals were treating 1542 people for Covid-19 last night – 76 fewer than the day before. Of those, 113 were in intensive care – one more than in the previous update.

And sadly there have been 50 further deaths among people who tested positive for the coronavirus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, only NHS Shetland went without recording new positive tests in the past 24 hours.

NHS Orkney detected one new case, while NHS Eileanan Siar recorded four.

On the mainland, NHS Grampian’s cumulative total is now 12,909 after 46 new positive tests were registered.

And in NHS Tayside there were 45 new cases – which took its overall tally to 12,571.

Scotland has now recorded 188,345 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

But in more positive news, the number of Scots who have received at least one of their vaccination jags is closing in on one million.

Some 985,569 people had had their first jab by 8.30am on Wednesday morning – up 57,447 on the same time on Tuesday. This was the second largest single day increase and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that this was “nothing short of extraordinary” given the widespread snow disruption across Scotland yesterday.
