Badenoch and Strathspey Highland councillor Muriel Cockburn is urging people to look at what’s available on their  doorstep and to ‘Shop Local, Eat Local, Think Local’.

She is pointing out that Christmas trade is crucial for many small independent retailers and to safeguard them and the vibrancy of High Streets.

Backing the SNP initiative, she said: "We’re launching the ‘Shop Local, Eat Local, Think Local’ campaign. People should try their local shops first when planning a shopping trip."

"At this time of year so many businesses depend on the support and loyalty of locals to succeed.

"For instance Grantown High Street’s gift shops have a fantastic variety of choices and ranges for all budgets and great Christmas stocking fillers.

Aviemore caters for all outdoor enthusiasts, book crafts and a range of suitable gifts to suit all ages. There is also an abundance of food and drink experiences.

"While I have named our two largest towns I would encourage all to visit our villages, relax, beat the crowds and they may find that unique gift.

"There are so many delightful shops and enterprises across Badenoch and Strathspey."
