A new block of flats in Aviemore named in honour of the village's ski star is reaching new heights.

Baxter's Court is the proposed name for the new affordable housing currently being built on the site of the old Aviemore Village Hall off Grampian Road.

Altough not officially named yet, the suggestion in honour of Alain Baxter, Britain’s first-ever claimant to an Olympic medal on snow, has been finding favour.

Highland Council's Badenoch and Strathspey ward manager Liz Cowie explained the naming process to the Strathy.

She said: "For new developments - either street naming or the naming of a development - if the developer does not propose a name then the request to consider an appropriate name comes to the ward councillors and is put on the ward business meeting agenda.

"Members will propose a name or choice of names.

"The next step is that the relevant community council is consulted."

The local watchdog found the suggestion agreeable when it was put to them earlier this year.

"When the name is agreed this is advised to the Planning Technician, Corporate Address Gazetteer Team" said Ms Cowie, "who checks it - in case it is a duplication, for example - and then confirms with it the developer.

"The final step is that it is reported to area committee, if time permits. If not it is agreed and a report is submitted to the council's area committee for homologation."
