INVERARAY virtually guaranteed survival in the top flight of shinty at the weekend, with a convincing 4-0 win over Glenurquhart in a Scottish Hydro Premier League game which was eventually played on the very soft Inveraray pitch.

Euan McMurdo slotted home the opener for the home side in 19 minutes, and Russell MacKinlay added a second in 35 minutes to give the Fynesiders a comfortable half time lead. Two more from McMurdo in the 55th and 82nd minutes concluded the scoring and denied Glenurquhart the third place finish that had been theirs for the taking at the start of the game. Instead, Kyles Athletic can now finish in third place after a 5-2 victory over Bute in a game played at Dunoon. Matthew MacColl netted a hat trick for the home side, Fraser MacDonald and Thomas Whyte added the other two, whilst Hector and David Whitelaw netted for Bute, whose survival in the Premier League is now hanging by a thread. Bute have to win their last two games by a total of five or more clear goals between the two to push Lochaber back into the frame. For Kyles, the third placed finish that would make everyone in Newtonmore's day would be achieved by beating Kingussie this coming weekend by three or more clear goals to edge out Fort William. Simple, really - if it wasn't for the opposition. And in this most epic of seasons, this final game for Kingussie is of huge importance. Kingussie have scored 77 league goals this year - but Ronald Ross's personal tally is 51 of those goals. It would seem likely that if anyone proves in the end to be Kyles' downfall, Ross is the usual suspect. But Kyles have beaten Kingussie twice - once in the league and once in the Camanachd Cup - both by a 4-3 margin. For Newtonmore supporters, even a draw will be enough for the celebrations to begin for their first league title in twenty six years. At the same time that Kyles are scheduled for that momentous occasion, Newtonmore Camanachd will be holding their annual sale in the village hall (from 2pm). No doubt the mobile phone lines will be red hot with updates as the assembled company in the hall hold their collective breath. |
