The Blue and Whites completed a routine 4-0 victory on Saturday over a determined but ultimately outplayed Oban Camanachd to extend their goal difference to 39. 'More made a confident start and in only the second minute, a strong run in from the left wing by Steven MacDonald forced an early save and corner. Danny MacRae got his shot on target forcing a save from Stobbart in the Oban goal in the fifth minute. Glen MacKintosh ran through on goal but his first touch was just too strong and ran out a short time later. Newtonmore did take the lead in the 14th minute when Evan Menzies got onto the end of another powerful attack to force the ball home for the opener. The game was then held up for five minutes as the goal netting collapsed and had to be re-affixed to the crossbar. After the game resumed, Stobbart pulled out a good stick save from Menzies and efforts continued to rain in on the Oban goal but without another breakthrough. Into the second period and the Blue and Whites began strongly again before Oban worked their way back into the game and enjoyed a short period of pressure themselves without really threatening.
David Cheyne came on for Newtonmore in the 59th minute replacing Jamie Robinson, and took up a position up front with MacKintosh dropping back to the centreline. Cheyne's first hit of the game proved to be a fierce volley into the net from 12 yards out for 'More's second. Two minutes later and Stobbart pulled off a good hand save from another Cheyne effort. Four minutes later he pulled off a superb stick save in the top left corner of his goal from a Menzies 30 yard rocket. Stobbart pulled off another close range save in the 69th minute, but this time Menzies was on hand to bundle the ball home for Newtonmore's third. MacKintosh received a pass from MacRae tight to the byeline and lashed home from an impossible angle to make it 4-0 in the 74th minute. One minute later and it looked like five as Newtonmore were awarded a penalty. Cheyne stepped up to the mark but he slid his effort wide of the keeper's left post. Stobbart pulled out three more good saves in the closing stages and the score remained at 4-0. |
