SATURDAY'S dream of making it to this year's Camanachd Cup Final turned into a frenetic, but ultimately wild, goose chase for the Kings and Kyles Athletic.

Originally, the match had been scheduled for 4pm at Ballachulish, after the Bute v Fort William semi-final at the same venue. But horrendous weather on Friday meant that it was decided the venue couldn't host two matches. The tie was switched to An Aird in Fort William, but still at 4pm. The teams made their way there only to find that, at 3pm, with rain still falling, the referee declared An Aird unplayable. So the decision was made to make the trek back to Ballachulish, with a 5pm start to allow the players time to warm-up. On a muddy and wet Jubilee Park the game finally got under way. But on 65 minutes, with worsening weather conditions and a threat to player safety, the referee abandoned the game, with the Kings 4-1 up. In truth, the pitch was in a mess when the game started and many felt it should simply have been called off. With the association desperate to get both ties played, perhaps referee Charles Young may have started the game against his better judgement. No announcement has yet been made of the date and venue for the game to be replayed. |
