WITH nothing doing for the Badenoch first teams, the game of the day was at An Aird, where Fort William were hoping to bounce back from three successive defeats by defeating Kyles Athletic.

It was not to be, as a severely weakened Garrison side, missing 10 players through injury and holidays, went down to their fourth loss in a row by a 1-2 margin. Thomas Whyte and Grant Irvine saw off the challenge with Victor Smith the only scorer for the home side. Kyles move to the same 15 point mark as Fort William, but with both having played 15 games, Newtonmore, a point behind, but with four games in hand, look certain to overtake them. Indeed, 'More have a chance next weekend to move into joint top spot, if they can beat current second placed Glenurquhart at Drumnadrochit. Fort William will be back to full strength for the coming weekend when they face Bute in the first of the Camanachd Cup semi-finals at Jubilee Park, Ballachulish, at the weekend. Veteran Victor Smith, who won a Sutherland Cup medal with the second team a fortnight ago, looks to have booked his place in the starting line up for the senior side as they push for victory. Lose, though, and their season is in tatters. Kyles, on the other hand, will go into their semi against Kingussie with this win behind them and will no doubt pose problems for the Kings, especially having beaten them at the start of the season in the league, though the odds are very much in favour of the Badenoch club, particularly if Ronald Ross can maintain his recent spectacular run of form. In the other Premier League matches played at the weekend, Bute were buoyed in advance of their cup semi by a 2-0 win at home against Glenorchy with Stuart Strathie and Robert Walker scoring first half goals. The result condemns Glenorchy to relegation. Inveraray moved up to seventh as they dented Oban Camanachd's progress with a 3-2 win at home. Grant Griffin scored the opener for the Fynesiders in ten minutes, but Daniel MacIntyre equalised two minutes later and on the half hour mark, David Devine shot Oban in front. Scott Robertson pulled the home side back on level terms five minutes before the turn, then a Gary Macpherson penalty in the 52nd minute finally sank Oban. |
