KINGUSSIE continue to stake their claim to retaining the Premier League title with another win, this time 3-0 at the Dell against Oban Camanachd.

Ronald Ross scored all three goals, the first in the 20th minute, but several other efforts went close in the first period including two that hit the post. Turning at just 1-0 up, in the 57th minute, Ross fired home with an unstoppable shot from close range on an angle tight to the byeline. The third came in the 65th minute – another well struck effort – but with the Kingussie midfield playing well, they will perhaps be disappointed not to have scored more. Kingussie's second string travelled to Skye and won 5-2 with four goals from Thomas Borthwick and one from Rory Borthwick. Both Badenoch giants will have been cock-a-hoop that Fort William suffered a shock defeat at Drumnadrochit at the hands of Glenurquhart. The Fort went down to a single Lewis Maclennan goal, which means that Glenurquhart now move into third place. However, they have played three more games than Fort William and five more than Newtonmore, in fourth. If Kingussie and Newtonmore win their games in hand, they will both be a point clear of Fort William, but the crunch will come for 'More and Fort earlier than they might have expected. Their league encounter at the Eilan this Saturday is a must win game for both sides if they are to take the title from the Kings. Even a draw will not be good news for either side. In the only other Premier League match, Kyles Athletic drew 2-2 with Lochaber at Tighnabruaich. In the Balliemore Cup Final, Strathglass ran out easy winners against Kinlochshiel by a 5-1 margin on the Isle of Bute, though the sides are counting the monetary cost of making such a long journey, estimated at something like £6,000 between the two teams. A Lee Bain effort had given the Strath the advantage in the 37th minute but Keith MacRae equalised for 'Shiel on the stroke of half-time. Goals in the second period from Robert Geddes (2), player manager Garry Reid and Marc MacLachlan sealed the win. |
