THE North second division fixture between Newtonmore and Kingussie colts at the Eilan was played on a glorious evening on Friday – and proved to be an entertaining night's shinty.

The first half was an even encounter played at a fast pace featuring end-to-end shinty and chances at both goals.

Newtonmore appeared to be first off the mark in the 26th minute after a fierce drive rebounded off the post and was driven home, but the goal was chalked off for offside.

They did take the lead in the 38th minute when determined work on the right wing saw the ball come through to Mark MacDonald in space on the left hand side of the D with time and space to pick his spot and drive home.

Just five minutes later, however, Thomas Borthwick fired home following a free hit to level the scores at the turn.

The half had been characterised by hard tackling and clean hitting from both sides and the score at that point was a fair reflection of the game.

Into the second half and within four minutes, Kingussie were 3-1 ahead.

First Martin Dallas fired home, then, from the throw-up, the ball went straight to Thomas Borthwick in the clear and he lashed home a strong drive.

In the 57th minute, Chris Sellar fired home from a tight angle after robbing two Kingussie defenders of possession to make it 3-2.

Two minutes later, 'More could have gone level when a penalty was awarded but Mark MacDonald's shot was well saved by the Kingussie keeper.

With veteran Davie Borthwick increasingly dominating and controlling the play for Kingussie, Dallas notched up his second in the 63rd minute to restore the Kings' two-goal advantage.

A minute later and it was Thomas Borthwick's turn again from close in on the left side to make it 5-2.

Towards the end of the game, as Newtonmore's heads went down, Dallas fired home with a shot from distance in the 80th minute.

He rounded off a highly satisfactory half for Kingussie with a shot to the keeper's right from around the penalty spot in the 85th minute to make the final score 7-2.

In truth, it was not so much that Newtonmore folded in the second half but more that Kingussie turned on a superb display of penetrating, attacking shinty thanks to the tried and tested formula of mixing experience with youth.
