Ross, who reached the 1000th at the recent MacTavish Cup semi-final against Lovat, started out in senior shinty in February 1992.

He shows no signs of slowing up the goal count either, having already found the back of the net 20 more times since he hit the 1,000 mark.

Camanachd Association president Duncan Cameron said: "I have known of a great many outstanding players in the sport of the shinty over the years, but none of them scored even half as many goals as Ronald.

"He truly is the icon of our sport."

Ross said that he was pleased to pick up the award. "I knew they were planning on giving me something to mark scoring 1,000 goals.

"It's always nice to get some new silverware, but more importantly, I was delighted with the coverage that reaching the landmark got. There was some great publicity for our amateur sport."

Also collecting an award at the 2008 Marine Harvest Awards was Ross' manager, Jimmy Gow, presented at An Aird in Fort William on Saturday.

Gow steered Kingussie to another hugely successful 2008 league campaign, in which Kingussie won all 18 of their matches – the first time the feat has been accomplished in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Jock Sneddon, Fort William, won the youth coach of the year. His achievements included coaching the U14s to the Ken MacMaster Cup for the fourth year in a row.

John MacDonald, also from Fort William, scooped the player of the year award. Judges said that he is one of the finest all round players currently in the game today and had produced an outstanding performance at the 2008 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup against Kingussie.

The under-21 player of the year was awarded to Steven Morrison from Skye Camanachd, who has been in their first team since the age of 16 and has been part of the under-21 international squad for the past two years.

For their great league and cup form in 2008, the club of the year went to Glenurquhart Shinty Club, whose sides gained promotion from both North Division One and North Division Three and made it to the final of the MacTavish Cup.

The Jonny 'Ach' Macrae Quaich awarded to the referee of the year went to Ronnie Campbell of Fort William, who is regarded as one of shinty's most consistent officials.
