KINGUSSIE'S Ronald Ross continued his rich vein of scoring even by his own impeccable standards by giving Lovat six of the best at the weekend.

He was instrumental as the Kings powered their way to a 10-1 victory on Saturday to progress to the next round of the Camanachd Cup.

Russell Dallas opened the scoring for the Badenoch side in the ninth minute before two quickfire strikes by Kevin Thain and Paul Gow made it 3-0 in the 17th and 18th minutes.

Ross chipped in with a couple in the 25th and 28th minutes and then a third in the 40th minute to make it 6-0.

John White pulled one back for Lovat to leave it at 6-1 at the turn, but three more from Ross and another from Thain brought the tally to double figures.

The biggest surprise of the day in the cup though was when Inveraray were unceremoniously dumped out of the cup by a Bute side that had been defeated by the same team only a week earlier.

This time, Bute rattled in seven against Inveraray's four. Davie Robertson gave Inveraray the early lead in five minutes but Stewart Strathie equalised five minutes later.

Goals from Hector Whitelaw and Robert Whitelaw extended Bute's lead to 3-1.

Gary Macpherson pulled one back for the Fynesiders but a second strike from Robert Whitelaw restored the two goal cushion on the stroke of half time.

Lovat's Daniel Grieve tries to get the ball away from dangerman Ronald Ross as keeper Stuart Macdonald looks on.

Hector Whitelaw made it 5-2 a minute into the second period, then Robert Whitelaw completed his hat-trick to make the score 6-2.

A late rush of goals saw Inveraray pull two back through Ruaraidh Graham and Neil Campbell, but Strathie had the last laugh for the Island side with a strike in the 78th minute to round off the victory.

The game between Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic was called off because Kyles players are quarantined because of a recent swine flu scare.

The other tie to go ahead was between Kinlochshiel and Fort William, which the Fort might reasonably have expected to win at a stroll.

However, 'Shiel were more than up for it and gave the Lochaber outfit the scare of their lives.

Gordie MacDonald gave the home side the lead in five minutes but Brian Simpson equalised for Fort to leave the match finely balanced at half-time.

Simpson was on hand again to see Fort take the edge but Finlay MacRae popped up for 'Shiel with three minutes on the clock to level, and take it to extra time.

In the end, Simpson was to be the scourge of Kinlochshiel with an extra time winner just three minutes before the penalty spot beckoned to give Fort the narrowest of escapes.
