THE David Ritchie and Sons sponsored Strathspey and Badenoch Welfare Football League is already looking like a two-horse race between RBL Aviemore and Kingussie.

In the latest games last Tuesday, the Legion defeated Tomatin United 5-0 and the Badenoch side had an easy 5-1 win against Aviemore Thistle.

The Aviemore pitch hosting the RBL match was extremely hard following the recent hot spell and the inconsistent bounce proved a problem for the players but exciting for the spectators.

The Legion trio of Alan Rose, Alan Docherty and David Robertson kept the visitors busy with crisp passing and moving and nearly took the lead in the 12th minute, but Robertson's lob just cleared the crossbar.

RBL opened their account when Robertson collected the ball out wide and whipped in a cross which was headed home by Scott Hume from close range.

United failed to capitalise on a poor goal kick from Chris Miller. From the break, the Legion's Colin Campbell collected the ball well inside his own half and rounded four Tomatin players before shooting wide from the edge of the area.

Tomatin were nearly on level terms when a great cross evaded the Aviemore side's defence, but the unpredictable pitch saw the ball bounce away from the on-coming attackers with the net unguarded.

The visitors posed a threat on the counter and, just before half-time, both RBL central defenders were caught upfield but failed to make the most of their numerical advantage and could only muster a weak shot off target.

The pressure began to tell in the 48th minute when Tomatin's defence failed to clear the ball and Alan Rose scuffed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The visitors' inability to find the net was punished by a third RBL goal in the 65th minute. A long ball found Hume who nodded on to Robertson, who made no mistake with his lob.

A few minutes later Robertson collected another through ball and was unlucky when his left foot shot struck the post.

RBL skipper Stuart Scullion intercepted a poor defensive clearance in the 70th minute and put industrious midfielder Brian Minard through and his low shot into the corner gave Stuart no chance.

United put on Bobby Kennedy, who always carries a threat, but it was too late to stem the tide. RBL bagged number five after a Campbell free kick found Docherty, and he ended his barren scoring run by passing the ball into the net from close range.

* THE Kings went into Tuesday's game buoyant following the previous week's McCook Cup final success over RBL, and a poor Thistle side offered little in the way of resistance particularly in the second half.

The Aviemore side had been first out the blocks as Cammy Gaff gave them an early lead, which they held for the whole of the first half.

Kingussie were eventually rewarded with an early second half equaliser from Jeddy Remmegio and then the floodgates opened.

They were given a helping hand when Thistle's Jamie Simpson saw red for foul and abusive language – the first sending off of this season.

Rory Borthwick got the second, Remmegio grabbed his second, Dougie Langlands made it 4-1 shortly afterwards, before Thomas Borthwick completed the rout direct from a corner.
