NEWTONMORE’S hopes of a Camanachd Cup fell at the first hurdle against old rivals, Kyles Athletic, at Tighnabruaich.

Duncan Kerr gave the home side the lead in the second minute, but Newtonmore were back on level terms in the fifth minute through David Cheyne.

Despite strenuous efforts on both sides there was to be no further scoring in either normal time or extra time and the game went to penalties.

Kyles eventually won through by three penalties to two.

Now Newtonmore have to pick up the pieces in time to take on Fort William on Saturday in the MacTavish Cup semi-final.

It is the first of three crucial encounters against the Lochaber outfit that simply have to be won if Newtonmore are to rescue something from the ashes of the weekend.

Newtonmore’s second team had a torrid time at the Eilan in North Division 2, when they came up against unbeaten leaders, Glen Urquhart.

The Glen side have a good mix of experience and youth, and their strong youth policy over recent years is clearly beginning to reap dividends.

They played fast, clean hitting shinty that always had Newtonmore stretched.

The visitors took the lead through Ewan Brady who slotted home after a fluffed clearance in defence.

Newtonmore battled hard for a while and Chris Sellar nailed the home side’s first clear cut chance into the top right corner to level.

Three minutes later, Douglas Gray in the Newtonmore goal pulled off a good save from a penalty only to see the rebound slotted home by the Glen’s Calum Fraser.

Then, in the 36th minute, Brady scored his second with a good strike from the right side of goal to make it 3-1.

Into the second period and Newtonmore showed briefly, but the game was settled when Brady was first to react to poke the ball home after a swift break.

Newtonmore's Neal McCreath overcomes his marker to fire a ball upfield.

Five minutes later Fraser was on hand to receive a clean pass square in front of goal and volley home. In the 65th minute, Fraser completed his hat-trick with another well taken strike.

Thereafter, there was no further scoring mainly thanks to Gray in the Newtonmore goal who pulled off three fine saves.

Fort William had a much more successful day in the cup, winning 5-3 in the local derby against Kilmallie, though Kilmallie gave as good as they got in the first half.

Gordie MacKinnon put Fort in front, then a John Stewart double for Kilmallie gave the visitors the advantage.

Bryan Simpson levelled the tie a minute before the turn and that was to provide the momentum they needed.

Fort pulled away in the second half with a Gary Innes double.

Michael Rodger pulled one back in the 70th minute, but Simpson’s second strike five minutes later sealed Fort’s win.

Oban Camanachd also progressed with a 2-0 win over Lochaber thanks to a Scott MacMillan double early in the second half.

Also taking place at the weekend were the Macaulay Cup first round ties.

Glenorchy had an emphatic 6-3 win over Kilmory with a Kieran MacKay hat-trick the highlight.

Glen Urquhart also made it through to the next round, with a 2-1 home win over Lovat. A Billy Urquhart double established early superiority and although Raymond Rennie pulled one back five minutes before the turn, there was no further scoring.

Bute also qualified for the next round, by virtue of a walkover as Tayforth were unable to raise a team.

In the Sutherland Cup, Kyles played their tie against Kinlochshiel postponed from last week at Glendaruel and won though easily with a 7-1 scoreline, including five from Alistair MacKay.
