The contract, from 2009-2012, brings live coverage of three of the big matches during shinty's summer calendar and builds on a commitment which has raised the profile of the sport.

The live matches to be shown are the Camanachd Cup Final, the shinty/hurling international between Scotland and Ireland when Scotland are at home, and the Macaulay Cup Final.

When the shinty/hurling fixture is in Ireland, BBC Scotland will show an additional live cup final match from the domestic shinty season.

David Harron, editor of TV Sport for BBC Scotland, said: "It's great news for shinty fans that we can continue our in-depth coverage of some of the biggest matches in the sport's calendar.

"We have substantially increased our level of live televised shinty in the last few years, and are delighted to be able to bring our audiences yet more live action from one of Scotland's indigenous sports."

Duncan Cameron, president of the Camanchd Association, said: "The association is delighted that BBC Scotland is going to continue coverage of principal events over the next four years.

"Live coverage of our matches has been first class and has received favourable responses from shinty fans and viewers who are new to the sport."

The games will also be streamed live on the internet through the BBC Scotland sport portal. Agreement also includes live radio coverage of the matches on BBC Radio Scotland and Radio nan Gaidheal.
