THIS season's championship is shaping up to be the most open and unpredictable for years as four of the top five featured in draws at the weekend.

Kingussie faced Fort William at the Dell and shared in a hard fought 2-2 draw. Ronald Ross and Paul Gow scored for the home side, while Bryan Simpson and Gordie MacKinnnon did the business for the Fort. Meanwhile, Newtonmore travelled to Oban and came back with a 1-1 draw. The only team in the top five to win was Kyles Athletic, whose 3-1 victory over Inveraray at Tighnabruaich saw them join Fort William on seven points, but in second spot on goal difference. A Matthew McColl double saw them take the early advantage, then Kyles' Calum Miller gifted the opposition an own goal ten minutes later. Fraser MacDonald made it 3-1, although Kyles also had Colin MacDonald sent off. Glenorchy and Bute also shared the points at Dalmally with a 1-1 draw, while the other team to win in the Premier was Glen Urquhart, who defeated Lochaber 2-1 at Spean Bridge. The results mean that there are only two points between first and sixth place, although Newtonmore are the only side yet to be beaten. Down in North Division 2, Fort William had a storming result against bottom club Kinlochshiel, winning 11-0, with Victor Smith netting seven times. Glen Urquhart remain in top spot, but having played a game more, after a 3-0 home win over Skye. Calum Fraser netted twice, with one from Ross Macaulay. Lovat move into second place with a 4-1 home win over Kingussie – the King's first points dropped in this division – thanks to a double from Jimmy Mackenzie, one from Martin Anderson and one from Tom Collins. Davie Borthwick scored Kingussie's consolation in the 75th minute.
Glengarry's 4-0 win over Caberfeidh lifted them to a mid-table position, leaving Cabers second from bottom, and one of three clubs still to register a point. The third club in the basement is Newtonmore, who lost out at home to Kilmallie to give the Canal Park outfit their first points of the season. The match opened with fairly even play, but Nick Lavin slotted home from the left side of the D in five minutes to give Kilmallie the lead. Newtonmore created chances and had perhaps the greater share of posession but couldn't put the ball in the net and they were punished for their profligacy in the 25th minute when Lavin netted his second. So the score remained by the break though it was hardly a fair reflection of the run of play. After the interval, Newtonmore's domination of the game became all the stronger, especially after Fraser Coyle pulled one back five minutes in. But try as they might, the over eager forwards simply couldn't put away any more of a string of chances. In North Division 3, Kincraig, sporting a new strip thanks to new club sponsor A.T. Don, continue to soldier on, but defensive frailty continues to see them leak goals. Saturday was no exception with visitors Lochbroom winning 7-2. Kincraig had taken an early lead through Ian Grant in the sixth minute, but by the turn, they found themselves 4-1 down. In the second period, Lochbroom added another two before Donnie Ross netted a second for Kincraig with a well-taken strike from the right side of the D on the 78th minute. The visitor's final goal came four minutes later as the defence was guilty of failing to clear the ball cleanly. Related articles: |
