A RECORD entry of 12 teams contested the Inverness Sixes women's tournament on Sunday – and Glengarry's vice-like grip on the trophy was loosened as Glasgow Mid-Argyll beat their city rivals Tir Conaill Harps 3-1 in the final.

Nine clubs were represented at the Bught Park with GMA, Lochaber and Strathglass each fielding two sides.

The teams were divided into two round robin pools of six each, with the top two progressing into the semi-finals.

Glengarry and Forth finished level on points and goals scored in their league, requiring a penalty shoot-out to determine who were winners and runners-up.

The Glasgow sides came through from the other section to set up two intriguing semi-finals.

GMA gained a measure of revenge for their defeat in the 2007 Valerie Fraser Cup Final by overcoming Forth 2-0; and, on the other pitch, Glengarry's proud record of winning every Inverness Sixes women's title since the competition began in 2002 was ended by a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tir Conaill Harps.

In the final, TCH led 1-0 at half-time, but a Katie Drain hat-trick after the break clinched the Alistair Gow Shield for Glasgow Mid-Argyll with a 3-1 final scoreline – and Drain's heroics landed her the Murdo MacLean player of the tournament trophy.

Women's shinty attention now turns to the Marine Harvest Festival at Spean Bridge this Saturday (August 2), with the North select looking to turn the tables on their South counterparts. There is a strong contingent from the new ladies' Badenoch and Strathspey team represented in the North squad.
