Bad weather saw the start of the event delayed until Sunday, when, with a £500 cash prize and lots of Vans' goodies up for grabs, competition was fierce. A misty start to the day meant the judging runs needed to be split. The top two obstacles were judged by local rider, Andy Laird. The bottom section of the park, which contained the choice of three obstacles side by side – down rail, kicker, or up/flat/down box, leading to a tricky 'c' rail at the end of the park – was overseen by another two judges. As the weather began to clear, and the sunshine shone through, the girls showed they were as tough as the boys, hitting every obstacle through the park. But it was Lucy Batler who impressed the judges the most to take first place. Kate McCondiche came second and Rhianna Nuttal was third. In the junior category, Adam Garms walked off with first place followed by Shawn Allan – who wowed everyone with a front flip – and Pete Medows in third.
The youth class was won by Andrew Forwood, followed by Calum Andean in second and Danny Higham, third. The over 18 section was the toughest decision, with impressive tricks being performed on all obstacles. First was Mark Watson, second Rich Sim and third Chris Tasker. Vans' Dawn of the Shred II will return on March 22-23. Competitors should contact CairnGorm Mountain closer to the time for updates on conditions. The timetable for the day is: 9am-11am – Entrance and registration; 11am-4.30pm – Open competition; 7pm-late – Vans' Apres Ski Party.
