POP Idol winner Michelle McManus is to perform at the new Boat of Garten Community Hall next month – thanks to a little help from the "Strathy".

In association with BBC Radio Scotland, the hall's bosses are to host "Let's do the show right here" on October 6.

The money raised from the event will be used to buy new items for the hall, which only opened last month following a huge community effort – including raising an astonishing £100,000 towards the project.

Husband and wife organisers Graham and Lorraine MacPherson put in the winning bid to the popular radio show which helps community groups raise funds for projects.

Mrs MacPherson said: "We saw a wee article in the 'Strathy' ages ago, looking for applications from folk who wanted to raise money for their group or fund-raising cause.

"We thought 'yep, let's have a go at that' and lo and behold our application won the attention of the BBC's production team, and here we are."

The show will feature a variety of local talent as well as a special inter-village quiz and a mini auction – but the big draw will be Michelle McManus herself.

"We're fair delighted that Michelle is coming to the Boat" said Mr MacPherson.

"The proceeds from the show will go towards buying curtains for the new hall".

McManus, now 27, was thrust into the limelight after winning ITV's second Pop Idol contest in 2003 despite Simon Cowell not being her greatest fan.

He was proven wrong, however, when her first single "All This Time", debuted at number one on the UK singles charts in January, 2004, and stayed there for three weeks.

The Glaswegian singer's second album is due for release later this year.

Tickets (£10 adults/£8 accompanied under-16s) can be booked by calling Mr and Mrs MacPherson on (01479) 831506, or bought at local shops in Boat of Garten.
