Closure of creche would be huge loss

IT IS a real shame that the Les Enfants creche at the north end of Aviemore is to close in two months.

We know from personal experience that the creche provides a top-class service and even brought a number of innovations to the area.

This even included the use of webcams allowing parents to check up on their tots from their PCs at home or work.

The creche offered a very structured programme for the development of young children, and the staff themselves provided an excellent caring environment.

The premises were brand new, immaculately maintained and equipped to a very high standard with lots of activities for babies and tots to enjoy.

All in all, the opening of Les Enfants was a godsend to parents in Aviemore, and all at very reasonable prices.

Sadly, some of their excellent work has been overshadowed by two incidents - the latest of which the owner herself has described as "totally unacceptable".

We are sure that it would not be beyond the bounds of possibility that a protocol or change to the entrance could be introduced to prevent another walk-out.

Indeed, alarms are to be fitted to this end.

The owner has said that the private creche is closing down on financial grounds, although it would not be human not to be hurt by some of the claims being made in the community.

The closure of Les Enfants will undoubtedly leave a big gap in provision in the area. Just 20 months ago, arranging child care for babies was a full-time job in itself.

It may already be too late, but if all those who will suffer childcare problems from March 30 make their needs known in sufficient numbers - and back this up with bookings - then perhaps there could be a change of heart.

THE decision by Macdonald Aviemore Resort to pull out of the High Life Highland scheme has provoked one of the most heated responses in the 'Strathy' for several years.

Clearly the swimming pool and poolside facilities at the resort are well-liked and well-used by local residents.

There is public money available for a deal to be done - Highland Council were keen to continue the arrangement - and times are tough for all businesses.

Hopefully the strength of feeling will get the bosses of High Life and the resort back together to see if an amended deal can be thrashed out.

If not then a lot of people will lose out, including the resort if High Life is introduced at a rival facility.
